Our principles form the foundation of the group with the snake. They contain the shared agreements and topics that every member commits to and actively supports. Before becoming part of the group with the snake, you must read these principles and agree with them — otherwise, participation is not possible. All elected and delegated representatives, as well as all members of the group, commit to acting in accordance with these principles.
In the following text, the term “biology students” refers to all Bachelor’s and Master’s students of Biology and the Teaching program (SPL 30 and SPL 31 at the University of Vienna).
- Open
The group with the snake is open to all biology students. Everyone interested is invited to participate. Anyone with questions, concerns or issues is welcome to share them with us.
- Non-partisan
We are non-partisan and therefore not bound to any political group. We exclusively represent the interests of biology students (excluding PhD candidates). During elections, we do not accept support from campaigning groups and we do not give voting recommendations for UV (University Representation), BV (Federal Representation), etc. Individual members may belong to a political party as long as they respect our principles and do not represent party interests within the STV Biology Vienna.
- Grassroots democracy
We operate on the basis of grassroots democracy, meaning that in decision-making processes all attendees are equal. Every opinion is heard and considered in discussion. There are no hierarchies within the group. No distinction is made between elected and non-elected members.
- University and education policy oriented
Our primary responsibility is to represent biology students. Our work focuses on issues related to education policy. Additionally, we aim to communicate and advocate for the needs and interests of our scientific fields.
- Open access to education
Education should be freely accessible and free of charge for everyone. We firmly reject admission restrictions, knock-out exams and tuition fees. We advocate for sufficient spots in practical courses, free compulsory courses, practice-oriented teaching as well as adequate student spaces.
- Independence of education and science
We stand for the independence of education and science. This includes supporting research that may not have immediate financial benefits such as fundamental research.
- Representation of the rights and interests of all biology students
In committees, working groups and university bodies, we represent only the rights and interests of biology students. Our work always aims to improve university life from a student perspective.
- Equal opportunities for all
We advocate for equal opportunities for all biology students, regardless of socioeconomic background, political views, origin, sexuality, appearance, etc. Everyone should have access to the same opportunities.
